Welcome

root@glyndwr$ cat /etc/motd_

Hi. My name's Richard; I'm a computer science doctoral student at cs.cf.ac.uk. With that done, I promise not to write anymore personal crap. Well, at least without warning you first.

What's here?

This site has information on a bunch of stuff I'm interested in. Hey, it's a homepage, that's what it's supposed to do. If I didn't fill it with vacuous crap of no interest to any other human being, then the WIPO would take my neat vanity domain name off me and demote me from geek status.

The writing section contains an index of various things I've written, including some computer game reviews for Gair Rhydd, the Cardiff University student newspaper and some freelance work I've done for UK IT magazines. The coding section has programs and similar I've written, and the other stuff section contains, oddly, other stuff. Finally, if you're really bored, you might like to read my deadjournal blog.

Also, please feel free to consult the Frequently Asked Questions list, or contact me.

My blog

Ah, hell, all the coolest kids were doing it so I did it too. There are far more regular updates on there than there are here, that's for sure.

Site update, 031001
Hello. I'm still alive, as you may see from reading my blog, which is updated twice a day as opposed to this site, which is updated twice a year. Bye then.

fscked.co.uk proudly announces partnership with fscked.org

FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION

CARDIFF -- WALES -- Jan. 16th -- FSCKED.CO.UK, a tiny backwater of a geek site with some half-assed content and a blog full of rewarmed opinions harvested from the less moronic quarter of slashdot -- today announced a partnership with premier gay raver porn purveyer, fscked.org.

Mike Perry, of fscked.org, pointed out that with the natural synergistic content generation strategies of sites, coupled with the overlap in the target demographic of "skinny geeks", this leads to the creation of the FSCKED MEDIA CONGLOMERATE. It is now clear that all other NU MEDIA institutions are as nothing before the might of this powerhouse. We're going to shut ZDNet and CNet down, and that's just for starters.

You heard it here first. The future's bright. The future's fscked.

Oh, and if Aussie who owns fscked.net would like to get in touch, we will be able to ensure that the FSCKED MEDIA CONGLOMERATE becomes a truly world-spanning, 24/7 operation. Which would clearly be a good thing. I mean, apart from anything else, I only update this site every five months. I need other people to carry the workload while I create synergies and see the bigger picture.

It's not really six months since the last update. I had a data problem (well, I slipped with a rm command) and I've lost a few files. So I do update more frequently than three times a year. Honest.

Muhh. Four months without an update. I suck.

Massive update to the photos section, though, with new photos all over the place. Plus, I finally finished the bluffer's guide to my PhD topic.

So much for going mad with updates. Instead, I spent a week or so lazily pulling apart and re-writing the script I use to manage this site so it works better.

I have, however, put up a three part article on how I set about quietening down my overly loud, overly clocked PC. Part 1 sets the scene and shows how I started working out what I could do. Part 2 is a mini-review of the Titan Copper Cooler graphics card HSF, whilst Part 3 shows how I exchanged the (loud) 60mm fan on my CPU heatsink for a (quiet) 80mm one.

This is probably my biggest update ever... so go read it, dammit. And then mail me about it.

Going mad with the updates now. Possibly out of guilt.
  • Updated my PC spec page.
  • Lots of re-arrangement of the photos section.
Coming soon: a review of the Titan Copper chipset cooler, more rearrangement of the site, some more of my utility Perl scripts in the Coding section, and possibly some other stuff if I can think of any.

Blimey, it's been nearly six months since I updated. How rude of me.

Site update, 15/7/01
  • Moved my photo to the stuff section.
  • Added a top posting rant to the writing section.
  • Added details of my second, third and forth articles for Internetworks magazine to the writing section.
  • Updated my PC details in the stuff section.
  • Fiddled with this page a bit.
  • Added my ICQ status to the contact page.
  • Tidied up some of the code lisings so there are less blank lines and they are hopefully a bit easier to read.

See my hit logs.
